Magma Global has developed s-pipe™, a small diameter flexible pipe suitable for intervention applications that require ultra high pressure, high temperature, sour-service and fatigue resistance. This new pipe will be unveiled at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, which runs at the Reliant Center from 6th – 9th May 2013.

s-pipe™ shares the same fundamental qualities as m-pipe®, the company’s high end carbon fibre polymer pipe, while offering a smaller minimum bend radius (MBR). Using Victrex® PEEK thermoplastic polymer and a combination of higher strain fibres to facilitate lightweight and reel-ability, s-pipe™ is ideal for challenging intervention and work-over applications.

5, 10, 15 and 20 ksi versions of s-pipe™ are available in diameters up to 3”. It is resistant to highly corrosive fluids and resilient at high temperatures that currently cause problems for existing solutions.

Intervention demand

Martin Jones, Magma CEO commented; “s-pipe™ addresses a requirement for intervention work to have the performance characteristics of our m-pipe® product in a more tightly spooled package. The high pressure, high temperature and practically inert behaviour of s-pipe™ combined with excellent flow rates and reduced pressure drop will facilitate improved performance and wider engineering benefits across the whole intervention equipment spectrum.

“We see s-pipe™ as being an ideal product for the more challenging intervention and workover applications, particularly where pressures are 15ksi and above. We have developed s-pipe™ in direct response to challenges our customers tell us they have with current solutions,” concludes Jones.
We have worked closely with him for several years and have been impressed with his breadth of knowledge, experience and grasp of the positive impact m-pipe will have in solving some of the challenges facing subsea exploration and production. We expect Steve to have a significant influence over our development and delivery of m-pipe, our strategic direction and growth.”

Commenting on his appointment, Steve said: “It is an exciting time to be joining Magma; my experience at 2H and wider industry relationships will give a great foundation to help move the business forward very rapidly.”

“I believe m-pipe offers the potential for a significant improvement in the way we design, manufacture, install and operate critical riser systems. It’s time for us to look to new materials to solve some of the tough challenges the offshore industry faces; materials which will reduce risk and installed cost of riser systems.”

Steve will take up his new role on 5 September 2011.
