Structural Performance
Magma has developed m-pipe®, a unique carbon polymer pipe for riser and subsea applications. It is a high end product, combining the very best polymer and carbon fibres to create a high strength, lightweight pipe that it is highly resistant to corrosion and fatigue, making it a perfect product for demanding riser applications.
Made from a combination of carbon fibre and Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and manufactured using Magma’s unique process, m-pipe® has a number of Performance advantages:
- Light weight / high strength – typically 1/10th of the weight in water of the equivalent steel or un-bonded flexible
- High strain to failure up to 2%
- Extremely high fatigue capacity
- Fatigue performance unaffected by sour service
- Corrosion resistant to seawater and CO2
- High temperature operation up to 390°F, 198°C
- High resistance to permeation (100 x that of pa11, pvdf, pe)
- Virtually indestructible from effects of rapid gas decompression
- Low thermal conductivity, 10x better than steel
- Better erosion resistance compared to steel
- Excellent wear resistance
Pressure Rating
- m-pipe® has been designed to operate in pressures up to 20,000 psi
Free from Fatigue
m-pipe® does not fatigue when operating within design limits. Extensive test cycling to high strains (0.5%) sees no knockdown on the long term performance of m-pipe®.
Flow Resistance
Flow resistance is a function of surface smoothness. The internal surface of m-pipe® is much smoother than that of steel or un-bonded flexible pipes:
Comparison of Pipe Surface Smoothness
| Pipe | Surface Smoothness |
| m-pipe® |
0.05 μm |
| Steel pipe | 0.4 - 25μm |
| Corroded pipe | 500μm |
